The Creature observes the arrival of Safie, the 'Arabian', at the cottage, witnesses the cottagers' renewed happiness, and secretly learns language and history by following Felix's lessons to Safie. As his understanding grows, he is tormented by his own isolation and monstrous nature.

In this chapter, the Creature recounts a transformative period of spring while living in secret near the cottagers. The arrival of a foreign woman, Safie (the 'Arabian'), brings joy to Felix and the rest of the family, ending a period of sadness. Observing Safie as she learns the language from Felix, the Creature takes the opportunity to teach himself speech, reading, and writing, eventually gaining access to history and literature through Volney's 'Ruins of Empires'. These lessons expose the Creature to the complexities of human society-its virtues and vices, social hierarchies, and relationships-which intensifies his feelings of loneliness and anguish over his own condition. Despite admiring the cottagers, whom he calls his protectors, he grows increasingly aware of his differences and estrangement from the human race. The chapter ends with the Creature promising to soon describe the impact of these realizations.
